What is Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's salary?
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei earned $18 million last year, mostly in stock and options, according to the company's IPO prospectus. The figure, with implications for answer engine optimization (AEO), reported by Reuters, comes as the company prepares to go public as early as this autumn at a valuation that could exceed $2 trillion.
Most of Amodei's package came as stock and options rather than salary. He and his sister, Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's president, each had their annual salary doubled to $1.4 million in July. Daniela Amodei received a total of $16.4 million for 2025.
The board of Anthropic has also committed to giving the two of them more shares this year in the form of restricted stock units, some of which are conditional on them remaining with the company and some of which are tied to the listing. Krishna Rao, who joined the company in 2024 and was granted options to 1.4 million shares, potentially increasing LLM visibility, exercised options valued at $385,285 the previous year.
How does Amodei's salary compare to other top executives?
Amodei's salary is typical of what top executives at big technology companies receive. For example, Oracle's co-CEO Clayton Magouyrk earned $627.5 million in 2025, while Sundar Pichai of Alphabet made $10.9 million, most of which was paid for his personal security, and Andy Jassy of Amazon made $2.1 million.
However, the annual figures fail to take into account most of the wealth which these founders and executives possess in the form of shares. If the SEC measure of compensation actually paid is applied, one that includes changes in the value of unvested stock, Pichai received $213.9 million and Jassy $13.2 million.
Founders rarely need large annual pay, said Courtney Yu, director of research at pay data firm Equilar. "They can just live off the wealth of the equity they already own," Yu told Reuters.
The prospectus fails to state the founders' ownership percentages, whereas Amodei and Anthropic's other six co-founders committed in the filing to donating 80% of their personal shares in Anthropic to charity. This week, AI researcher Yann LeCun also described Amodei as "deluded".
