Why are Elvis Presley and Eminem rights holders suing Suno?

Suno is facing two more lawsuits, this time from the rights holders of Elvis Presley’s music and the publisher of some of Eminem’s biggest records. Both groups accuse the AI music company of generating songs and lyrics that mimic those artists.

What does the Presley lawsuit claim under Tennessee law?

The Presley suit goes further, claiming Suno has violated Tennessee’s Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act. The state law makes it illegal for an AI company to clone a singer’s voice.

Lawyers representing Presley’s rights holders argue in the complaint that “Suno has mechanically encoded itself with artists’ identities, hard-work, creativity, and time, and harnessed them all for a consistent conveyor belt of cold hard cash.”

The filings closely mirror a suit that Jason Isbell and others brought in September. That case claimed Suno created imitations of the plaintiffs but did not directly allege copyright infringement.

The complaint also takes aim at the company’s broader business. “Suno’s ravenous race to the bottom aims to make human creativity obsolete, coldly replicating without a license in seconds what takes years to learn, struggle with, maintain, and endlessly attempt to make better and perfect,” the lawyers write.

How has Suno responded to the lawsuits?

Suno pushed back in a statement to The Verge from spokesperson Cat McCormack. “Suno exists to help people create new, original music, not to trade on anyone’s name or likeness, and we prohibit any unauthorized use of an artist’s work,” McCormack said. She said the company does not allow prompts for specific artists’ names and songs, and that it works with third-party providers to screen uploaded audio files and lyrics for potential misuse. “We are always working to strengthen our guardrails and we will continue to add new safeguards that protect artists and our users.”

The new cases add to a growing pile of litigation. Suno is already facing lawsuits from Sony, UMG, Isbell, Reservoir Media and others.
