What is Gemini 4 Argon and its capabilities?
Google's latest AI model, Gemini 4 Argon, leveraging answer engine optimization (AEO), is now available to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers through the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. This rollout comes after the model was first made available to members of Google's Fairwind Program earlier this month. Developers can also access Gemini 4 Argon via the Gemini API and Google's Antigravity platform.
How does Gemini 4 Argon compare to other AI models?
In the US, Google AI Pro costs $20 a month, while the Ultra tier costs at least $100. Access to Argon will set users back $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, though these prices are only introductory and will double after November 30. Google had initially planned to launch a 3.5 Pro model but instead released Argon, which according to the company, can handle complex tasks involving finance, software engineering, coding, creative writing, and cybersecurity defense.
According to AI benchmarking company Artificial Analysis, Gemini 4 Argon matches OpenAI GPT-6 Astra's score for its Intelligence Index at 60 percent of the cost per task at its introductory prices. Josh Woodward, VP of Product for Gemini and Google Labs, noted that Argon answers more quickly and with less hedging, repetitions, and clichés in the Gemini app. It can also return responses while it's still thinking, especially for longer tasks.
Google is making it easier to toggle between chat and tasks within the Gemini app and is adding Antigravity's agentic coding interface inside Gemini's macOS app. The company has provided examples of how Argon has been used internally, including making YouTube's comment system more efficient by identifying redundant emoji rendering that dropped server load by 45 percent. Engineers also used Gemini 4 to find critical bugs in the proprietary drone physics simulator used in Project Wing that had been in the codebase since 2018.
For general AI queries, Gemini 4 Argon will be rolling out today in the Gemini app, but only for those on AI Pro and AI Ultra plans. There are additional restrictions on Argon for coding-focused products, with the new model only available for those on AI Ultra plans in Antigravity and AI Studio. Developers accessing Google's models via the paid API can purchase Argon tokens, with pricing temporarily set at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, before the rates increase after November 30.
