Gemini for Home Replaces Google Assistant
Google announced that its original voice assistant will be replaced by Gemini for Home, an AI‑powered platform designed to work across all Google smart home devices released in the last decade. While users will still use the "Hey Google" wake word, Gemini removes the need for rigid commands. The system understands context, remembers prior requests, and can interpret sentences like, "Hey Google, I'm about to watch a movie, turn off the lights," applying the command specifically to the living‑room lights.
More Conversational Interactions
Gemini enables users to combine multiple requests in a single utterance and to create automations simply by describing them, eliminating the need to open the Google Home app. For users who prefer to skip wake words altogether, Gemini Live offers a back‑and‑forth chat experience, allowing natural‑language dialogue about any topic.
AI‑Enhanced Camera Features
The new platform extends AI improvements to smart cameras. Gemini can generate smarter notifications when motion is detected or notable events are captured, thanks to its semantic understanding of visual content. Users can retrieve specific footage with natural‑language queries and ask the system questions based on recorded video, such as "Did I leave the car door open?" This capability is provided through a feature called "Ask Home," similar to Google Photos' Ask Photos.
Home Brief and Summarized Footage
Gemini also introduces "Home Brief," which identifies important events in recorded video and summarizes hours of footage into a quick, readable overview, helping users catch up on what happened while they were away.
Subscription Model and Availability
To access Gemini Live, AI‑powered notifications, Ask Home, and Home Brief, users must subscribe to Google Home Premium at $10 per month. The subscription also adds an extra 30 days of cloud storage for video captured by smart home cameras and is included at no additional cost with Google’s AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.
Early access to Gemini for Home is available through the Google Home app. The rollout will occur throughout the month of October, with smart speakers and smart displays receiving the update toward the end of the month.
