Google disclosed on Thursday that NotebookLM, the company’s AI‑powered research assistant, will now operate under the name Gemini Notebook. The rename aligns the product with Google’s Gemini family of artificial‑intelligence tools, the blog post explained.
Launched in 2023 as an experimental project called Project Tailwind, the service has grown into a widely used platform. Google says more than 30 million individuals and 600 000 organizations rely on the tool for everything from study notes to data analysis.
Gemini Notebook distinguishes itself by limiting its answers to the material users upload—web pages, PDFs, audio files, and the like—rather than pulling information from the open web. If a query falls outside the supplied sources, the assistant replies that it cannot provide an answer based on the available data. The blog post illustrated the point with a hypothetical math document and a question about dolphin biology.
New cloud‑based capabilities
Alongside the rebrand, Google rolled out a major under‑the‑hood upgrade. Each notebook now runs on a secure cloud computer, enabling the assistant to write and execute code directly within the workspace. The enhancement expands analytical possibilities, letting users perform deeper data crunching without leaving the app.
The update also introduces fresh output options. Users can export results as JSON files or Microsoft PowerPoint presentations (.pptx), broadening the ways notebooks can be shared and presented.
Availability begins Thursday for Google AI Ultra subscribers and Workspace business customers who have either AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. Google says AI Pro users accessing the service via the web will receive the new features in the next few weeks.
Since its debut, Gemini Notebook has added several integration points. Notebooks sync automatically with Google Drive, and users can launch a new notebook straight from the Gemini app. Google hinted that the tool will soon appear in AI Mode within Search, further embedding it in the company’s ecosystem.
The rebranding and feature boost signal Google’s intent to position Gemini Notebook as a central hub for AI‑augmented research and productivity, a role the company has cultivated since the early days of Project Tailwind.
