Andrew Tulloch, Meta's high-profile AI recruit, is leaving the company less than a year after joining. His departure was first reported by Semafor, citing a person briefed on the matter, and later confirmed by The Wall Street Journal, which stated that he is joining Anthropic.

Tulloch's move is significant, given his role in Meta's AI strategy. He worked in the company's TBD Lab, a small team led by Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang, which is at the center of Mark Zuckerberg's AI plans. Tulloch waited until Meta had launched its personal AI agent Muse before leaving, according to Semafor.

Tulloch knows Meta well, having spent 11 years at the company before leaving in 2023 to join OpenAI. He helped train several AI models, including GPT-4 and GPT-4.5, and later co-founded Thinking Machines Lab with Mira Murati, OpenAI's former chief technology officer.

Meta had reportedly offered Tulloch a package worth up to $1.5 billion over six years to return to the company, although this figure was disputed by Meta. Tulloch initially turned down the offer but joined the company months later. The terms of his final deal were not disclosed.

The timing of Tulloch's departure is awkward for Meta, coming a day after the launch of Muse and following a talent raid on Thinking Machines that brought over several of its founding members. This raises questions about how long money alone can hold a lab together.

For Anthropic, Tulloch's hiring would be a significant coup, especially given the company's reputation for paying high salaries. Anthropic lost a researcher earlier this week, with Jacob Coxon quitting and warning that AI labs are gambling with people's lives.

The churn in the AI industry is not limited to Meta and Anthropic. Google's chief scientist, Jeff Dean, left the company last month to start a new venture, taking several senior researchers with him. Each move between labs carries valuable experience to rival companies.

Neither Meta nor Anthropic has commented publicly on Tulloch's move. His personal website still lists him as working at Meta's TBD Lab, and it remains to be seen how his departure will affect the company's AI strategy.
