What Is Agent Mode?

Agent Mode is an artificial‑intelligence feature integrated into Microsoft Word and Excel. Powered by Microsoft 365 Copilot, it allows users to generate and improve documents and spreadsheets by describing what they need in plain language. The AI takes on the heavy lifting—drafting text, suggesting refinements, and building formulas—while the user iteratively steers the output toward the final product.

How It Works in Word and Excel

In Word, users can ask Agent Mode to create a resume, write a holiday letter, or draft a business report. The AI drafts the content, asks clarifying questions, and refines the text based on feedback. In Excel, users can request a household budget, specifying categories such as rent, groceries, utilities, gas, and entertainment. Agent Mode then creates the necessary columns, inserts formulas to track over‑ or under‑budget amounts, and can also build more complex financial analyses for business scenarios.

Office Agent in Copilot Chat

Beyond Word and Excel, Microsoft has added an Office Agent to the Copilot chat experience. This assistant helps users create PowerPoint decks by responding to prompts like “Create a 10‑slide PowerPoint deck of the most popular tech products in the US.” The agent clarifies visual themes, target audiences, and research depth, then iteratively refines the presentation.

Availability and Rollout

Agent Mode is currently available through the Frontier program for Microsoft 365 Copilot‑licensed customers and for Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscribers in the United States. The feature works in Word and Excel on the web today, with desktop versions expected soon. To try Agent Mode in Excel, users install the Excel Labs add‑in and select the Agent Mode option. Office Agent in Copilot chat is also part of the Frontier program and operates in the web version of Microsoft 365 Copilot in English.
