OpenAI has hired Dan Driscoll, the former Secretary of the Army, to advise the company on national security. The company announced the hire Monday. Driscoll will serve as senior counselor for national security modernization.
What Will Driscoll Do at OpenAI?
In the role, Driscoll will advise on how advanced artificial intelligence can strengthen national and cybersecurity. He will work with OpenAI’s leaders and with outside partners. His main focus, the company said, is helping U.S. allies use the technology responsibly.
“National security requirements are changing faster than at any time in the past fifty years,” Driscoll said in a statement. He said AI could help people in national security cut through paperwork, make sense of growing volumes of information and get answers faster.
Who Is Dan Driscoll?
Driscoll was the 26th Secretary of the U.S. Army. OpenAI said he oversaw nearly one million soldiers and more than 265,000 Army civilians. He also served as acting director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, according to his statement.
Why Did Driscoll Leave the Pentagon?
He left the Pentagon in September after months of tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, The Wall Street Journal reported. Driscoll is a former Army officer and a law school classmate of Vice President JD Vance, the Journal said.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive, framed the hire in terms of international competition. “The US has an extraordinary opportunity to work with other countries to spread the adoption of democratic AI,” Altman said.
Driscoll will also help OpenAI’s teams understand what national security institutions need. The company said the hire builds on Daybreak, its cyber resilience program with allies and partners. OpenAI has opened Daybreak to Ukraine and has pitched it to utilities in the United States.
The hire comes after a shift in OpenAI’s relationship with the Pentagon. In February, the company agreed to deploy its models on the Defense Department’s classified network. Bloomberg reported that the deal came after rival Anthropic’s relationship with the Pentagon broke down. Anthropic is still fighting its Pentagon case in court.
