How does Yelp's Check for Me feature work?
Yelp users can now have an AI voice agent call a restaurant on their behalf to find out how long the wait is. The feature, called Check for Me, appears on restaurant pages in the Yelp app. Users enter their party size and phone number, and the agent makes the call, then texts back the wait times so they can decide whether to head over.
The move follows a wave of personal assistants that have started making calls for people. Over the last few weeks, tools like Instinct, Fo, and Muse have enabled users to call businesses for customer support and appointment booking. Yelp is now bringing that capability to its consumer app.
Last year, Yelp launched its own voice solution for restaurants and service providers. Check for Me covers the consumer side of that equation. Because a user’s agent could end up talking to the restaurant’s agent, the conversation could break down when two AI systems interact.
What else is Yelp adding to its AI assistant?
Yelp is also overhauling its AI assistant, the chatbot that helps users discover restaurants and services. A new OpenTable integration lets users book a table without leaving the app. The assistant will now remember preferences mentioned in earlier chats, and users can access their chat history from the past 30 days, with full history coming soon.
Users can also ask the chatbot to set custom reminders, such as sending weekend activity suggestions every Friday. Yelp is letting people build their own lists, starting with two: “Been Here” and “Want to Go.” Lists can be filtered by location, category, and cuisine, reordered, annotated with notes, and shared with others.
Next month, Yelp will begin showing weekly personalized recommendations based on saved items and rankings. The company is also converting collections into lists and giving the lists tab a new look. Those changes roll out later this year, along with a maps view.
How much does Yelp's Smart Lead Reply cost?
On the business side, Yelp is releasing a paid product called Smart Lead Reply. It replies to customers and engages them to qualify a lead. Business owners will pay $30 per month and can specify how the agent should handle a conversation with a customer. Meta has also been courting small businesses with AI offerings that handle inbound customer inquiries.
