Anthropic is rolling out a major upgrade to the memory capabilities of its AI products. Starting today, the conversational history that Claude builds with a user will be available in Cowork, the company’s collaborative assistant, eliminating the need to re‑enter background information when switching between the two tools.
The seamless handoff means that preferences for writing style, project details and other context persist across platforms. Users can continue a brainstorming session in Claude, then jump to Cowork for task management without losing the thread of the conversation.
Beyond the cross‑tool memory sync, Anthropic is automating how Claude stores information. The model now updates its memory in real time as the chat progresses, removing the old requirement to issue a specific “remember this” command. When a user mentions a detail—say, a deadline or a product specification—Claude absorbs it automatically, ready to recall it later without prompting.
Control remains in the user’s hands. A new Memory Settings panel lets users pause or reset the memory at any time. By navigating to Settings > Memory, users can view a list of saved topics, edit entries, or delete them outright. This granular management ensures that only the most relevant data stays on file.
Anthropic also introduced an opt‑in option for sensitive topics. By default, the system excludes data such as government identification numbers, criminal histories, financial account numbers and immigration status. Users who enable the sensitive‑topic toggle can have Claude remember details like a gluten allergy for personalized recipe recommendations. When a user attempts to store a prohibited type of information, Claude will issue a notification explaining why the data cannot be saved.
The memory feature is enabled by default on all subscription tiers—free, Pro and Max—across web, desktop and mobile interfaces. Sensitive‑topic storage, however, stays off by default and must be manually activated, preserving a privacy‑first stance while still offering flexibility for those who need deeper personalization.
To bring the new capabilities to mobile users, Anthropic updated the Claude app for both iOS and Android. The refreshed apps include the memory management UI, the automatic update behavior, and the sensitive‑topic toggle, ensuring a consistent experience regardless of device.
Overall, the enhancements aim to streamline workflows, reduce repetitive setup, and give users clearer oversight of what the AI remembers.
