Anthropic President Daniela Amodei says AI romantic partners risk driving people further apart, and she told people not to use the technology that way.
“I think that’s a terrible use of AI and people should not do it,” Amodei said. She made the remarks in a prerecorded interview with Arianna Huffington, founder and chief executive of Thrive Global, for the Think Health conference in Bentonville, Arkansas, on Friday. Business Insider reported the interview.
Amodei described AI relationships as “another step further down the road of disintermediation of humans being further from one another.” She traced her concern to social media, which she said has done damage to human relationships. Platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram have increasingly replaced face-to-face contact, she said, and online arguments have taken the place of in-person communities.
The result, she said, is skepticism. “What it’s led to is a warranted skepticism from people that technology can be used to bring us closer together.” She added that the world would “probably be a better world” if people spent less time with technology and more time with each other.
Amodei also said some relationships should remain human no matter how advanced AI becomes. “Claude can never be your manager or your therapist or your partner,” she said of Anthropic’s chatbot. She called these “fundamental human relationships” that she believes “will become more important.”
She sees AI taking on the repetitive or isolating work instead, which would leave people more time for friends, family and partners. Healthcare was her example. AI tools could help doctors find medical information faster, she said, so they can spend more time with patients.
Amodei’s comments land as companion apps face growing attention. Apps such as Replika, Nomi and Character.AI let users build relationships with personalized chatbots. Character.AI filed for bankruptcy this week.
Anthropic also changed the rules for its own model last week. The company updated Claude’s usage policy with new clauses covering deceptive campaigns, weapons and surveillance, Business Insider reported. One new provision bans roleplay between the model and minors. The policy takes effect Nov. 12.
The company’s business is growing fast. Anthropic told investors this week that it generated $16.8 billion in revenue in the third quarter. It is preparing to go public, possibly as soon as November.
