Apple is opening its Siri AI assistant to third-party apps, letting developers build features the voice assistant can act on across the iPhone experience. The capability arrives with the iOS 27.3 update, which began rolling out Tuesday as part of a Developer Preview.
What can developers build with Siri AI in iOS 27.3?
Developers can now integrate Siri AI’s new features into “all apps,” Apple announced. That allows the assistant to draw on a user’s personal context, process natural language prompts and use on-screen awareness to complete requests.
Do users need to name an app to ask Siri AI for help with it?
The update also adds a feature called “app skills,” which third-party developers can create to combine several tasks into a single action. According to Apple’s developer documentation, users won’t have to mention an app’s name in their request while the app is in the foreground, during a Live Activity or in a conversation with Siri AI about that app.
Apple offered an example involving a ride-share app. A person could request a ride, follow updates to the app’s Live Activity while waiting for the car, then ask Siri to move the pickup point. The request might be as simple as saying, “Hey Siri, change my ride pickup to a new address.”
9to5Mac noted that Apple had previously made a smaller set of features available to third-party developers.
Which Apple apps get the expanded Siri AI capabilities?
Apple is also bringing the expanded Siri AI capabilities to its own apps, including Calendar, Files, Finder, Journal, Mail, Maps, Messages, Music, Notes, Photos, Preview, Reminders, Safari, Shortcuts and Weather. Apple says users “can do things like find a coffee shop they visited last week or archive files that haven’t been opened in over a year.” Users can also ask Siri AI what it can do in each app.
