Will ChatGPT and Codex share usage limits starting in December?

Starting in December, subscribers to ChatGPT's Plus, Pro and Business plans will share a single usage allowance across ChatGPT and Codex. The change is tied to a broader move to bring the agentic capabilities of Work into the main ChatGPT experience.

How is usage measured across ChatGPT and Codex?

Usage will be measured in tokens, the units of information a model processes and generates. How much of the allowance a user consumes depends on the model chosen and the task requested. More advanced models and complex tasks generally draw down more of the allowance. Instant chat will not count against it.

The company says it is preparing carefully to avoid disrupting users' workflows. It expects most users will not have to wait for their usage to reset more often than they do now.

What happens when users hit their usage limit?

Users will be able to see their combined remaining usage and reset times in Settings, under Usage. Anyone who hits their limit will have three options: wait for the allowance to reset, upgrade their plan, or buy credits to keep using eligible features.
