Cat Wu, the product leader behind Anthropic’s Claude Code, is joining rival OpenAI, where she will lead product management for the Core Products team. She announced the move on X on Wednesday, a day after saying she had left Anthropic.
What will Cat Wu do at OpenAI?
OpenAI confirmed the hire to Business Insider. Anthropic declined to comment. An OpenAI representative told the publication that Wu will report to Thibault Sottiaux, who leads Core Products. She will work with Nick Turley on enterprise products and Ashley Alexander on consumer products.
Sottiaux welcomed her on X. “Welcome Cat. Stoked to be building together soon,” he wrote. OpenAI president Greg Brockman also greeted her publicly.
Why did Cat Wu leave Anthropic?
Wu wrote on Tuesday that Friday had been her last day at Anthropic. Anthropic confirmed her departure. She joined Claude Code two years ago, when it was a small internal tool. In the same post, she thanked the teams behind Claude Code, Cowork and Tag. She did not say why she was leaving.
Who is Cat Wu?
Wu joined Anthropic in August 2024 as a research product manager, according to a March article she wrote for the company’s website. That article lists her as head of product for Claude Code. Before Anthropic, she worked as a product engineer at Scale AI and Dagster, then as a venture capitalist. Business Insider reported that she was a partner at Index Ventures.
Wu is not the first member of the Claude Code team to leave recently. Thariq Shihipar, who also worked on the product, announced his departure from Anthropic in October, Business Insider reported.
Her exit comes as Anthropic moves toward a stock market listing planned for later this month. An amended IPO filing shows $17 billion in revenue. The company filed to go public in October.
Asked on X whether leaving would let her sell shares earlier than staff who stayed, Wu wrote that she had “no idea.” She added that it “wasn’t a factor for me.”
At OpenAI, Sottiaux’s group oversees Codex, the company’s rival to Claude Code. OpenAI has been pushing Codex beyond software developers. In June, it agreed to buy Ona, a company that runs Codex agents in customers’ clouds. Wu’s hire puts her inside the team building a direct competitor to the tool she helped grow.
