Etsy is cracking down on AI-generated listings, announcing stricter rules meant to reduce the flood of what it calls AI slop on the marketplace. In a post, the company acknowledged that “many active buyers say they can’t tell which items involve AI-generated content.” It also said sellers are “concerned about your work appearing alongside items that use AI in misleading ways.”

Under the new policies, every listing must include “at least one unedited photo of the actual item against a real background.” Every photo must “accurately represent the item a buyer will receive.” Images beyond that first photo can be edited with software or AI-powered tools, but only if “the final result remains an accurate representation of the physical product.”

Etsy shared several examples of misleading images that are now prohibited, including a cat stuffed animal pictured at the top of its post. The company said the examples were meant to show the kind of imagery sellers should avoid.

The platform is also adding a check during the upload process. If Etsy detects that an image may be AI-generated, a pop-up will appear asking the seller to note whether the image was made with AI. Sellers should expect to answer that question before the listing goes live.

The changes carry financial consequences too. If a buyer reports that the item they received is “materially different” from the listing, the seller may be responsible for a refund.

Sellers who offer “functional guides,” such as patterns, recipes or instructions, face separate requirements. Etsy says the information in those products “must be your own work, not generated by AI.” Sellers will also have to show an “actual result” made from the guide.

Etsy is not banning AI-generated art outright. Sellers can still offer it on the platform, but they must disclose that it was made with AI. The company also said listings created by bots are no longer allowed.
