Google is bringing its conversational Gemini assistant to Apple CarPlay, giving iPhone owners who prefer Google Maps a new way to get hands-free help while driving. The feature is available starting today to drivers in the US, and Google says the rollout is happening worldwide.

How does Gemini work in Google Maps on CarPlay?

Gemini in navigation lets drivers talk to the assistant inside Google Maps. Users can ask multi-part questions, such as which park is known for good views of the city, then have Gemini direct them there while avoiding toll roads. To start, drivers tap a Gemini icon that appears toward the bottom right of the Maps interface on their car's infotainment display.

Google describes the feature as a conversational way to find stops on the go, report traffic disruptions and get information about places. It is the same experience Google introduced to Android Auto last year, which took nearly 12 months to reach CarPlay users.

Does the CarPlay update include Personal Intelligence?

The CarPlay update does not include Personal Intelligence, the feature Google began rolling out to Android Auto users the day before. When enabled, Personal Intelligence allows Gemini to pull information from other Google apps, including Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Photos, YouTube and Search, to personalize its responses. Google says the feature improves Gemini's reasoning and lets the assistant deliver more specific details tied to a user's questions.

When will Gemini reach CarPlay users outside the US?

Google has not said whether CarPlay users will get the personalization update. Google did not immediately provide specific regional availability details for the rollout beyond the US, and it has not said when those details will be shared.

Google noted that the update may take a few days to reach a given device, so drivers who do not see the Gemini icon right away should check back soon.
