Google has introduced a new feature that automatically expands its AI search summaries for certain queries, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable. This change pushes the typical list of links from a search much farther down Google's results page. Instead of seeing a partial AI Overview with a 'Show more' button, users will now see a full AI Overview at the top of their search, followed by an 'Ask anything' box, and then the list of links.
The criteria for the auto-expanding AI Overviews are unclear, but Google spokesperson Jennifer Kutz says they dynamically expand for topics where the company's systems determine it's most useful for people. According to Kutz, Google's research has shown that this dynamic experience makes Search more helpful and encourages users to engage deeper in follow-up exploration.
Kutz also notes that if users have already begun scrolling to view content below the AI Overview, the expansion will be canceled to prevent users from losing their reading position. The feature is currently being tested, and its consistency varies across searches and browsers.
The move is part of Google's efforts to improve its search functionality and provide users with more accurate and relevant results. By incorporating AI-powered summaries, Google aims to enhance the search experience and make it more engaging for users.
