Google introduced Gemini Omni, its latest artificial‑intelligence content‑generation tool, at the company's I/O developer conference on Tuesday. The announcement took place at the Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California, alongside other AI features such as Gemini Spark and Universal Cart.
Gemini Omni lets users type a prompt and receive a generated image or video. The "Flash" version is already live, enabling creators to produce and edit short videos within the Gemini app, Google Flow and YouTube Shorts. Google said additional output formats—including still images and audio—will roll out later.
The demo showcased a clay‑mation‑style clip explaining protein synthesis, illustrating the tool's ability to produce educational content quickly. Google positioned the service as a competitor to existing AI video generators from OpenAI, Shutterstock, Canva and its own Nano Banana 2 image model.
Labeling and verification features
In response to mounting public skepticism about synthetic media, Google announced a Content Credentials system embedded in the Gemini app. The feature will flag whether a piece of media was created by AI or captured with a camera and will indicate any post‑capture AI edits. Google also highlighted its SynthID detector, which continues to verify the provenance of AI‑generated assets.
Recent CNET research shows that 51% of U.S. adults want stronger labeling for AI content online, while 21% favor a total ban on AI‑generated posts on social platforms. Although 94% of respondents say they encounter AI‑altered media, only 44% feel confident distinguishing it from authentic content.
Google's dual approach—rolling out a new creation tool while simultaneously offering verification technology—reflects the company's effort to address both creator demand and consumer concerns. Whether Gemini Omni will gain traction among everyday users remains to be seen, but its launch underscores the accelerating integration of generative AI into mainstream digital workflows.
