Google has announced Gemini 4 Carbon, a new frontier AI model that the company says is the most capable on the market. Most people can't use it yet. Google is rolling the model out in stages, and it has not said when a wide release will happen.
How Does Gemini 4 Carbon Compare With Argon?
Carbon comes two weeks after Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon. It is not the lighter Flash model many had been waiting for. Instead, Google describes it as an improvement on Argon, and the two models have a lot in common. Google says Carbon beats Argon by slim margins in every test it has shared.
Cybersecurity and coding gains
The biggest claims center on security and code. Google says Carbon shows a “significant leap” in vulnerability detection, validation and remediation. The company also says the model is twice as likely as Argon to generate code that is free of vulnerabilities. The Chrome team claims Carbon is 10 times better than non-Google models at generating “high-quality” patches.
On WebDev Arena, Carbon gained 89 points and now ranks fourth on the leaderboard. Google's charts put Carbon at the top of several benchmarks, but the gap between Carbon and rivals is only a few points. Carbon also outperforms GPT-6 Astra, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Fable 5.1 in nearly every test Google included.
Google also highlighted safety results. In the Grey Swan evaluation, Carbon resisted every attempted prompt-injection attack, scoring 0 percent. Argon scored 0.7 percent, Opus 5.5 scored 1 percent and GPT-6 Astra scored 8.5 percent.
Because of its strength in agentic coding and cybersecurity, Google says Carbon requires a “deliberative approach.” The company is testing the model under the voluntary framework the U.S. government has established. Once that testing is complete, Google plans to roll the model out through its Fairwinds cyber defense program.
When Will Gemini 4 Carbon Be Widely Available?
Carbon will likely reach AI Ultra subscribers and developers using the Gemini API first. Like Argon, it will carry a temporary discounted API rate of $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. That price doubles when the introductory period ends. Argon's discount runs through the end of November, but Google has not specified an end date for Carbon. If the rollout follows Argon's pattern, Carbon could be widely available within a couple of weeks, though Google has not committed to that timeline.
A new platform for connecting apps to Search and Gemini
What Is Google's Connected Apps Platform?
Google is also making it easier for businesses to plug their software into its AI products. The company's new Connected Apps Platform lets developers and businesses submit their own apps to work with Google Search and Gemini, a step toward AI search optimization, and track how those apps perform.
Connected apps were introduced in Gemini and Search earlier this year. They let users securely link third-party services and take specific actions with them. A user could connect Canva to design a flyer, or YouTube Music to build a playlist. Other AI services, including ChatGPT and Meta's Muse, have tried similar integrations. The idea is that people might rely on an AI assistant to handle tasks that they now do in separate apps, a shift that could drive zero-click search.
Developers who want to participate can connect to a cloud-hosted Model Context Protocol server or Android MCP through the AppFunctions APIs. They then use the Google Connected Console to register, test and submit their apps. Developers can choose whether their app appears in Search, the Gemini app or both. Once an app is live, developers can monitor traffic, latency and error rates, and they keep control of their brand identity, including verified logos and authenticated accounts.
Gemini already has more than 50 connected apps, including offerings from Adobe, Experian, Localiza and Peloton, along with Google's own services such as Workplace, Photos, YouTube Music and Google Home. Those apps will come to Search over the next few weeks. Search currently offers fewer integrations, including Instacart, Canva, YouTube Music and Yahoo Fantasy Football. Google said meditation app Calm is also a new partner and will launch on both Gemini and Search soon.
The Connected Apps Platform is in public preview for U.S. developers who sign up for the waitlist. Google did not say when it will be more broadly available.
