Overview of Live Translation

Apple has introduced Live Translation for its AirPods, a feature that leverages Apple Intelligence to provide real‑time language conversion during face‑to‑face conversations. The technology processes speech on the user’s iPhone, ensuring that translation data remains private and can even function without an internet connection once the necessary language files are stored locally.

Hardware and Software Requirements

Live Translation is limited to AirPods equipped with the H2 chip. This includes the AirPods 4 with active noise cancellation, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3. In addition, the iPhone must be capable of running Apple Intelligence; compatible models are the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and any member of the iPhone 16 or iPhone 17 lineups. Users should verify that Apple Intelligence is turned on in the iPhone Settings and that the Translate app is installed. The AirPods also need to have the latest firmware, which can be checked in the AirPods section of the Settings app.

Downloading Language Packs

Before a conversation can be translated, users must download language packs for both the source and target languages. The Translate app initially supports English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese slated for later release. Language files are downloaded through the AirPods settings: select the AirPods name, tap the Translation section, choose Languages, and press the download icon next to each desired language.

Setting Up a Conversation

Once language packs are installed, the user sets up a Live Translation session in the Translate app. The app asks for the language being spoken by the other party and the language into which the user wants the speech translated. After confirming Apple Intelligence is active, users can initiate the translation via several methods:

  • Tap “Live” in the Translate app and press “Start Translation.”
  • Use a custom Action button on the iPhone.
  • Press and hold the stems on both AirPods simultaneously.
  • Ask Siri, “Siri, start Live Translation.”
  • Open Control Center and tap the Translate shortcut.

During the Translation

When the session begins, the AirPods emit a chime and Siri announces that translation is active. The AirPods’ active noise cancellation automatically engages to reduce background noise, allowing the device to focus on the speaker’s voice. In noisy environments, users can optionally use the iPhone’s microphones in addition to the AirPods for better accuracy. The translated speech plays through the AirPods, and a transcript appears on the iPhone screen. Users can also press a play button on the app to hear the translation through the iPhone speaker.

Ending the Session

The translation session can be stopped by tapping the “X” button in the Translate app. Apple notes that Live Translation is still in beta and relies on generative models, meaning translations may sometimes be inaccurate, unexpected, or offensive. It recommends users double‑check any important details such as addresses, directions, or contact information.
