Jev, a new AI model from TypeSafe AI, has become the fastest-adopted AI model ever, at least by one measure. Vercel data published Thursday shows that within two weeks of its launch, Jev was being used by 35% of paid teams on the platform, nearly double the reach of Sonnet 5.5, the next most popular model.

Jev was published in limited release on September 15. It is designed as a lightweight tool for choosing among a few predetermined outputs. Because the range of answers is limited, the model runs more cheaply and quickly than alternatives like Sonnet, which makes it well suited to sorting large amounts of data fast.

The approach has drawn plenty of attention. In the weeks since the release, competing offerings from OpenAI and Amazon, among others, have appeared. Until now, though, there has been little hard data on how much developers were actually using it.

The figures come from Vercel's AI gateway, a unified API service similar to OpenRouter. Vercel acknowledges that its view is limited. It is particularly likely to undercount major labs such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which offer their own APIs. Still, the numbers suggest the buzz translated into real use. Vercel was an early adopter itself, using Jev to replace GPT-6 Luna for classifying harmful commands.

The report also shows continued momentum for open source models. They now account for more than 70% of the tokens processed through Vercel's gateway and nearly 25% of total spend.

The overall market is growing fast, too. Spending on frontier labs has grown tenfold, even as those labs account for a smaller share of total spend. The report's authors argue that this pattern lends weight to the idea that frontier models and open source alternatives may turn out to be complementary rather than competitive.
