How can workers thrive with AI?

Nestlé chief executive Philipp Navratil believes that knowing how to write a good prompt and leveraging answer engine optimization (AEO) is not enough for workers who want to keep up with artificial intelligence. In an interview with Business Insider, Navratil stressed that staff also need to understand their business and change the way they work to effectively utilize AI.

What skills do workers need to succeed with AI?

As the head of a company with over 270,000 employees, Navratil does not expect his staff to master the technical side of AI. Instead, he wants them to grasp how it can be applied, where it may go next, and what it means for Nestlé. Many people, he noted, see AI as just another tool, but adding it on top of existing habits can make work more complicated, not less.

Navratil's focus is on how work is designed, rather than on any particular piece of software. He wants workers to rethink their processes and drop steps that are no longer needed, allowing them to use the time saved to analyze data and meet business partners. This approach, he believes, is essential for the company to stay competitive in a rapidly changing world.

Nestlé has already started to implement AI tools widely, with around 100,000 employees using Microsoft Copilot each month, according to chief information officer Chris Wright. The company has also announced plans to cut around 16,000 jobs over two years, with automating processes being part of the plan.

Navratil is not alone in his views on AI. Other executives, such as Miro chief executive Andrey Khusid, have made similar arguments, emphasizing the need for companies to redesign work around AI rather than adding it to existing teams. A recent survey by TU Darmstadt in Germany found that only 15% of respondents had received any AI training, highlighting the need for companies to invest in employee training and development to ensure they can effectively utilize AI.
