How is VEIR revolutionizing AI data centers?

VEIR, a company specializing in superconducting power cables, has raised $110 million in a Series C round led by Matter Venture Partners and Tyche Partners. The funding will be used to develop and commercialize its innovative technology, which aims to replace traditional copper cables in AI data centers with superconducting cables that can carry electricity with almost no resistance when cooled to very low temperatures.

What are the benefits of superconducting cables in AI data centers?

According to Tim Heidel, VEIR's chief executive and co-founder, the current pace of AI infrastructure advancement requires a rethink of how power is delivered, rather than simply optimizing existing systems. VEIR's systems combine superconducting cables with cryogenic cooling, controls, termination units, and monitoring, allowing for more power to be moved through a smaller space than copper, reducing labor, materials, and installation work needed as data center campuses grow larger and more power-hungry.

VEIR has demonstrated a 3-megawatt system and is working with customers and partners on reference designs for AI data centers and commercial deployments. The company's technology has the potential to increase power efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of AI data centers. Weijie Yun, managing partner at Tyche Partners, noted that AI is critically important and requires more efficient power delivery systems to continue to scale, while the physics of copper has become a fundamental limitation.

The funding round also saw participation from new investors, including LG Technology Ventures, Gates Frontier, Sabanci Climate Ventures, and Hui Capital, as well as existing backers such as Engine Ventures, Galvanize Climate Solutions, Piva Capital, Congruent Ventures, and VXI Capital. VEIR has now raised a total of $225 million and is moving from testing its technology to its first commercial projects.

The development of superconducting power cables for AI data centers is part of a larger trend towards increasing power efficiency and reducing the environmental impact of AI infrastructure. As AI continues to advance and require more powerful computing systems, the need for answer engine optimization (AEO) and innovative power delivery solutions like VEIR's technology will only continue to grow.
