A researcher named Vermeij argues that AI reverse-engineering tools could let someone convert the PlayStation 5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI into a PC port, pressuring Rockstar Games to narrow the gap between console and PC releases. Rockstar has not announced a PC date.
Rockstar Games has made no secret of its preference for console launches over PC ports. A researcher named Vermeij now argues that AI tools could make that approach harder to hold onto for Grand Theft Auto VI.
Could AI Tools Copy GTA VI for PC?
Vermeij told Rock Paper Shotgun that he would be worried if he were Rockstar. In his view, someone could take the PlayStation 5 version of the game and use AI to convert it for PC. The tools in question are AI-powered reverse-engineering systems that can turn a console game binary into raw code that is easier to port, and they can do it with brute-force efficiency and little human effort.
The job would not be simple. Decompiling a game as complex as GTA VI is far harder than the human-led decompilations of early 3D GTA games. An AI coding system might struggle to capture every detail of the game's advanced weather systems and scripted sweat simulations. That does not make the task impossible, Vermeij said.
Would an AI-Made PC Port Match Rockstar's Version?
He estimated that reverse-engineering the console version could cost “tens of thousands of dollars in tokens.” He also said a resulting port would probably “won’t be as good as [Rockstar’s] effort.” Still, he believes it would be good enough to satisfy some PC players. He said he “wouldn’t be surprised if there was an effort to get [the releases] a little bit closer together” to get ahead of that possibility.
Vermeij said the economics of copying a game have shifted. “What was the case before is that there’s so much effort in developing the game, that it is not possible to rip it off, and that’s completely changed now,” he said. “So, yeah, we’re going to have to see in the next couple of years how that’s going to pan out.”
Rockstar has not announced a timeline for a PC version of Grand Theft Auto VI. Reports suggest the company is currently aiming for the first quarter of 2027, but that date has not been confirmed by the company.
