Anthropic announced a new Import Memory capability that bridges the gap between OpenAI’s ChatGPT and its own Claude assistant. The tool, rolled out earlier this year, allows users to carry over saved context—preferences, prompts, or prior dialogue—from one chatbot to the other without starting from scratch.

To activate the feature, users first open Claude’s settings and enable the "Generate Memories from chats" option. If the menu appears under "Capabilities" instead of "Memory," they should select the appropriate entry. Once turned on, a button labeled "Import memory from other AI providers" appears. Clicking it produces a prompt that users copy to the clipboard.

Switching to ChatGPT, users navigate to their profile, select Personalization, and ensure the "Enable Memory" toggle is active. If memory was previously disabled, a short delay may be required for the system to sync. For a more thorough summary, users can shift the model to "Thinking" mode using the shortcut Shift‑Ctrl‑M.

After pasting Claude’s prompt into a new ChatGPT thread, the model generates a concise block of text that summarizes the saved context. Users copy that output and return to Claude’s import field, where a single click adds the information to Claude’s memory store. The process works similarly for other AI platforms, such as Google’s Gemini, provided the source chatbot’s memory feature is enabled first.

Anthropic notes that the import can take up to 24 hours to fully propagate. During that window, Claude may not immediately reflect the transferred context, but the assistant will gradually incorporate the data. Users can verify what Claude remembers by revisiting the Memory or Capabilities section in settings.

The feature arrives at a time when some users are reconsidering their reliance on ChatGPT, citing concerns over recent corporate partnerships and policy changes. By lowering the technical barrier to migration, Anthropic aims to attract those looking for a fresh AI experience without losing their personalized workflows.
