ChatGPT's dominance in AI referral traffic is undeniable, with the platform sending 95.1% of traffic that AI chatbots referred to websites in August, according to new data from BrightEdge. This marks the highest share for ChatGPT this year, with its referral traffic growing a staggering 101% between January and August.

Gemini came in second, with a mere 2.4% share, followed by Perplexity with 1.1% and Claude with 0.8%. ChatGPT's lead is substantial, sending about 22 times as much traffic as the three combined. The search marketing company's data also reveals that ChatGPT's referral traffic rose 36% in August alone, its biggest monthly jump of the year.

While AI tools still send far fewer visitors to websites than search engines, total referral traffic from AI platforms has grown about 73% in less than a year. BrightEdge's CEO and co-founder, Jim Yu, notes that ChatGPT's rebound can be attributed to OpenAI's push to improve the platform after Sam Altman declared a "code red" in December. This improvement has enabled ChatGPT to send substantially more users to the web than it was at the beginning of the year.

BrightEdge's data also shows that ChatGPT's lead extends to other measures, including live AI agent activity on the web and AI crawler visits to train models and build search indexes. In June, the company found that OpenAI accounted for 96% of live AI agent activity, with AI agents now making about 88 requests for every 100 visits from ordinary search.

Other trackers have seen a more crowded market, with Similarweb finding in July that AI search is fragmenting across more assistants. However, BrightEdge's data paints a clear picture of ChatGPT's dominance in AI referral traffic, with the platform's tools helping brands track their appearance in ChatGPT and other AI engines.
