Cloudflare rolled out Kitesurf, a cloud‑based browser created for AI agents rather than human users. The service, now in beta, runs entirely on the firm’s serverless Workers platform and is available at no cost through Browser Run, a tool that lets developers programmatically control headless browser instances on Cloudflare’s network.

Unlike conventional browsers that prioritize visual elements such as tabs, themes, and extensions, Kitesurf focuses on the needs of autonomous software. It manages context windows, token costs and scalability, and it is built to withstand a distinct threat model that includes prompt‑injection attacks and other AI‑specific vulnerabilities.

According to Cloudflare, the browser was assembled in just 12 weeks. Its core combines a modular rendering engine from Blitz, Firefox’s Stylo CSS parser, and Boa JS, a Rust‑based ECMAScript engine. The remaining components run inside Workers, giving the service a serverless edge that reduces latency and operating costs.

Performance claims are central to Kitesurf’s pitch. The company says the browser consumes significantly less CPU and memory than Chromium when performing common agentic tasks such as taking screenshots or extracting HTML. Lower resource usage translates into cheaper execution for developers who need to run large numbers of automated web interactions.

In its first public tests, Kitesurf rendered benchmark applications like TodoMVC, as well as high‑traffic sites including Wikipedia, Hacker News, the Cloudflare blog and the Cloudflare dashboard. The browser has already passed more than 215,000 web platform tests, and Cloudflare adds hundreds of new tests each week to expand coverage.

Open‑source projects also shaped Kitesurf’s design. The Rust headless engine Obscura inspired the initial proof‑of‑concept, which was a direct port of Obscura to Workers. Cloudflare credits that work for accelerating development and for demonstrating that a Rust‑based engine could operate efficiently in a serverless environment.

Developers can now use Browser Run to launch and control Kitesurf instances via API calls. The platform lets AI software navigate websites, fill out forms, and complete other browser‑based tasks without the overhead of maintaining a full‑featured Chromium stack.

Security researchers note that a browser intended for AI agents faces a different set of risks than traditional browsers. Prompt injection, where malicious input manipulates an AI’s behavior, could be weaponized against headless browsers that execute code on behalf of AI models. Cloudflare says it is building mitigations into Kitesurf’s architecture to address those concerns.

While Kitesurf is still in beta, Cloudflare’s entry into the AI‑focused browser market underscores a broader industry shift. As AI agents move from answering queries to performing actions on the web, tools that let them interact with online content efficiently and securely become essential. Kitesurf positions Cloudflare as a provider of the infrastructure that could power the next generation of autonomous web agents.
