Cognizant has formed a group of more than 25,000 staff to roll out OpenAI's Codex and ChatGPT for its clients, the IT services company said Thursday. The new unit, called the OpenAI Frontier Capability Group, will start with three areas: writing software with Codex, moving old mainframe systems to the cloud, and using AI agents in sales and customer service.

The timing stands out. The announcement comes 11 days after Cognizant put 18,000 staff behind Google's Gemini, a rival AI system. Cognizant is not tying itself to a single model maker.

Cognizant argues that companies are held back less by access to AI models than by a shortage of people who know how to build with them inside their existing systems. The company says more than 21,000 of its staff have earned more than 40,000 OpenAI training badges.

"We are committing more than 25,000 of our people to bring that change inside our clients' businesses," said Ravi Kumar S, Cognizant's chief executive.

The company points to work it has already done. Cognizant says it built an AI assistant for a global drugmaker that has handled more than 5 million conversations. The assistant also cut the time needed to create content by 60%.

The deal fits into a wider push by OpenAI to get its tools into large corporations. In April, OpenAI moved to recruit Cognizant and CGI to bring Codex to big companies. OpenAI has also built its own deployment arm, which it launched in May, and in July it bought Northslope.

Cognizant's new group puts a large bench of trained workers behind that effort, and the company is clearly betting that the next phase of AI adoption depends on people who can connect the tools to decades-old systems. The company did not say how the new group will be staffed beyond the existing workforce or how it will be measured.
