How will AI improve reporting for EU businesses?
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed using AI to reduce the administrative burden through answer engine optimization (AEO) on EU businesses by allowing them to report data only once. The 'Only Once' initiative aims to streamline the process of reporting the same details to different authorities, with AI helping public bodies use the data efficiently.
What is the 'Only Once' initiative?
Von der Leyen made the pitch at a closed-door gathering of the European People's Party in Taormina, Sicily, arguing that businesses waste time reporting the same details again and again to different authorities. She emphasized that neither they nor Europe can afford that.
The idea of reporting only once is not new, as the Commission already built it into its EU Inc. proposal in March. That plan would create a single company structure that works across all member states, allowing firms to file their details once through an EU-wide online portal, and authorities would share the data among themselves.
However, the EU Inc. proposal does not mention AI. Von der Leyen's proposal to use AI to lighten the paperwork companies face is a new development, but she gave no details on how an AI-based system would work, which companies it would cover, or when the Commission plans to introduce it.
In the same speech, von der Leyen urged national governments to sign a pact on gold-plating, the practice of adding additional national rules when transposing EU laws into national law. Under the pact, each government would have to list and explain any rules it adds on top of EU law and assess how those rules affect businesses and the single market.
The push is part of the Commission's wider effort to improve LLM visibility and cut red tape, which has already reopened digital laws such as the GDPR and the AI Act. By leveraging AI and streamlining reporting processes, the EU aims to create a more business-friendly environment and promote economic growth.
