Google is making links more visible in its AI-generated search answers, the company said in a blog post. The update arrives as publishers have raised concerns that the format sends fewer readers to their sites.
The changes apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, which deliver answers in a customized view rather than the traditional list of links. Google says links will appear “higher up in responses more frequently,” and that the goal is to “ensure key sources are easily clickable right when you need them.” The company cited “continued and substantial increases to the presence of inline links in our AI experiences.”
Google is also testing a few other changes. For sites that are among a small number of relevant sources for a specific task or piece of information, the company is trying out a display that places the links at the top of a response, along with some context. An example image from Google shows a query about an airline refund.
For “timely” articles, Google is expanding the link carousels it announced in May to more locations and languages. Links at the end of a query are getting a redesign, too, with image thumbnails and what the company calls “a more clickable design.” In AI Mode, Google is testing clickable links to search profiles for publishers and creators.
The company also pointed to its News AI pilot program, which it announced in December. According to Google, more than 400 publishers are taking part. The licensing program pays publishers for “the delivery and use of enhanced content to develop new AI features,” including “in-depth article overviews on Google News publisher pages.” Axios, CNN and the Financial Times are among the partners newly onboard.
