How many downloads has Meta's Muse reached?
Meta's AI companion app, Muse, has become one of only a dozen mobile apps to reach 10 million U.S. downloads within its first 40 days on the market. New data from Sensor Tower shows Muse has logged 10.9 million downloads since its September debut, with 10.2 million of those coming from the United States.
Only 11 other apps have reached that kind of post-launch milestone, according to Sensor Tower Senior Insights Analyst Kara Lee. The most recent was Meta's Threads, in July 2023. Most of the others are mobile games, including Fortnite, PUBG Mobile and Pokémon GO. Threads and Disney+ are the only non-game apps in the group.
Meta has a clear advantage in getting new apps in front of people. The company has marketed both Threads and Muse across its existing services. Threads was built on top of Instagram's social graph, and its content has been woven into both Facebook and Instagram. Muse benefits from the same approach, with Meta's family of apps reaching 3.6 billion daily active users.
Meta is also spending heavily on ads to bring in new users. Sensor Tower's data shows the company allocated 39% of its total advertising spend to Muse in October, up from 23% the month before. Muse now ranks as the 21st largest brand in the U.S. by advertising impressions this month, a jump from 73rd in September.
How does Muse's retention compare with other AI apps?
Getting people to download an app is one thing. Keeping them is another. Muse appears to be doing better on that front than its AI rivals. In the U.S., the app retained 30% of users after seven days and 23% after 14 days. Competing AI apps, including ChatGPT, Claude and Grok, averaged a 19% seven-day retention rate and a 16% 14-day rate over the same period.
Engagement is climbing, too. Muse's daily active users reached 2.5 million for the first time on October 16, a 15% increase week over week.
How does Muse's launch compare with ChatGPT's?
The app, which can carry out various tasks for users, shot to No. 1 on the App Store after its debut. At one point, it outpaced some of the metrics ChatGPT posted after its own launch. Muse's 10 million U.S. downloads compare with 3.7 million for ChatGPT in its first 40 days. Grok and Claude reached only 500,000 and 200,000 U.S. downloads, respectively, in the same window.
The global picture looks different. ChatGPT reached around 15 million worldwide downloads in its first 40 days, ahead of Muse's total. Sensor Tower notes that the comparison isn't fully even. Muse is currently available only in the United States and Canada, while ChatGPT drew users in markets such as Japan, Brazil and Germany. Japan alone accounted for 25% of ChatGPT's global installs during its first 40 days.
Muse has held the No. 1 spot on the U.S. App Store on nearly every day since launch. The streaming app Kick briefly took the top position on October 19, but Muse reclaimed it by Tuesday. The app has also ranked No. 1 on Google Play over the past 30 days.
