OpenAI on Tuesday rejected Apple’s trade‑secret lawsuit as baseless, saying the complaint shows no evidence of merit. The company’s response, posted on X after Bloomberg reporter Ed Ludlow obtained the statement, stressed that while the allegations are taken seriously, OpenAI sees no factual support for the claims.
Apple’s suit, filed on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, spans 41 pages and accuses OpenAI and its partners of a coordinated effort to steal confidential information and intellectual property. The complaint targets several OpenAI leaders, most prominently chief hardware officer Tang Tan, who spent 24 years at Apple and held senior roles such as vice president of product design for the iPhone and Apple Watch.
OpenAI’s statement highlighted the firm’s commitment to fair competition and the freedom of employees to work wherever they choose. "We believe in fair competition and allowing people the freedom to work wherever they choose, and we’re focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere," the AI lab wrote.
The lawsuit follows Apple’s internal investigation, which the company says uncovered evidence that OpenAI and its collaborators used Apple’s confidential data while developing its own hardware product. Apple alleges that the stolen information is feeding OpenAI’s efforts to launch a device that could directly compete with the tech giant’s offerings.
Industry observers note that OpenAI’s recent acquisition of Jony Ive’s startup io, along with reports of a forthcoming mobile, screen‑free smart speaker, adds context to Apple’s concerns. Bloomberg reported that the device, described by insiders as a "humanlike AI companion," would live in the home, feature moving mechanical elements, and be built with input from former Apple engineers who worked on the iPhone and Mac.
OpenAI has not commented further, and TechCrunch’s request for additional remarks remains unanswered. The case underscores a growing tension between AI developers and established hardware manufacturers as both race to integrate artificial intelligence into consumer products.
