OpenAI confirmed on Wednesday that Brad Lightcap, who has served as the company’s special projects lead and previously as chief operating officer, will leave the organization after an eight‑year stint. In an internal memo later posted to X, Lightcap told colleagues he is embarking on “something new” and will stay on for the next few weeks to help with the handoff.
Lightcap’s role at OpenAI has shifted repeatedly over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his COO responsibilities expanded to cover the firm’s “business and day‑to‑day operations,” including global deployment, business strategy, key partnerships, infrastructure, and operational excellence. By January 2026, he stepped back from leading the enterprise push on product and engineering, though he retained oversight of commercial functions. During that period, Barret Zoph briefly took over the enterprise effort before departing about five months later.
In April, Lightcap formally stepped down from the COO post and moved into a position heading OpenAI’s “special projects,” reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. Denise Dresser, the company’s chief revenue officer, assumed a significant portion of Lightcap’s former duties.
The departure adds to a recent wave of executive exits at the AI lab. Fidji Simo, head of artificial general intelligence, left in July after a medical leave, and chief marketing officer Kate Rouch stepped down in April for health reasons. The reshuffle coincides with a broader restructuring: President Greg Brockman has taken charge of product development, and the company has pledged to eliminate “side quests” in favor of core revenue drivers as it prepares for a public listing next year.
Lightcap’s memo reflected optimism about the organization’s trajectory. “Over the last few months, I’ve been focused on the next horizon and what would stand in the way of mission success,” he wrote. “I believe there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period… I am excited to help you all advance the mission from a different vantage point.” He concluded by expressing confidence that OpenAI will continue to earn the trust of its users as its tools gain broader adoption.
