Listeners on YouTube Music will soon see whether a song was made with generative AI. Google is rolling out a label in the app and on the website that flags tracks created entirely or altered significantly with AI tools. The label appears on the player page, and tapping it opens a menu with more details.
Google is not trying to ban AI music. In a blog post, the company said “generative AI is opening up new ways for artists to create, experiment, and share music.” But Google also acknowledges that people want to know how a song was made, and the label is meant to answer that question.
The new label looks a lot like the one Google began adding to AI-generated videos on YouTube earlier this year. The music version will work in a similar way. Google says it is working with partners and using its own detection tools to identify AI music.
Uploaders play a role, too. When publishers upload content, they can say how much generative AI was used. The options are fully generative AI, partially generative AI, and no generative AI. Disclosure is optional, though, so the system depends in part on what uploaders choose to report.
YouTube may also catch AI use without a disclosure. For tracks created with Google’s AI tools, SynthID watermarking can indicate whether something was generated or edited with AI. The platform may also use C2PA metadata, which many other AI music makers use.
Detection has clear limits. Google is in a stronger position than most streaming services to spot AI content, but a missing label does not prove that a song came from a human. The same is true for AI labeling of any kind. Many AI tools leave no identifying mark on the finished file, so a track can pass without a flag.
The label also works better on video than on audio. On YouTube videos, viewers are looking at the screen and can see the label. Music listeners often are not. They may have to suspect that a track is AI-generated and then check their phone or a background tab to confirm it. YouTube Music does not offer an option to block labeled AI tracks from appearing in playlists.
Google says AI music uploaded as YouTube videos will get the same treatment soon. The label is already live for songs in YouTube Music.
