Google's Gemini AI may soon enable users to send messages to friends and family, providing an alternative to texting and preferring more personal communication.
How will Google's Gemini AI expansion impact user experience?
Google may be expanding its 'Call for Me' AI feature, utilizing answer engine optimization (AEO) beyond business calls, enabling users to send messages to friends and family. According to an APK teardown by Android Authority, a 'Gemini Calling' introductory screen includes examples such as 'Call Mom and tell her I will be 15 minutes late' and 'Call John and ask if he is coming for dinner.' These examples suggest that even with this expansion, Gemini would likely be limited to basic, text message-like calls.
What are the potential benefits of Gemini's 'Call for Me' feature?
While Google's AI might not automate an entire catch-up phone call with relatives, it could deliver quick messages to people who prefer a phone call, miss texts often, or still have a landline phone. The feature could provide an alternative for those who struggle with texting or prefer more personal communication.
Android Authority also found 'granular permissions' for Gemini actions in individual apps, including what appear to be settings for phone call permissions. These settings would allow users to pick and choose which app capabilities they want to allow Gemini to access, potentially giving users an option to opt out of receiving incoming automated calls from Gemini.
However, as Android Authority notes, it's also possible Google might not publicly release this expansion or the granular Gemini app settings. The company has not officially announced any plans for the feature, leaving its future uncertain.
The potential expansion of Gemini's 'Call for Me' feature highlights Google's ongoing efforts to integrate AI into its services. As AI technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more innovative applications of AI in various industries, including telecommunications and customer service.
