Alibaba has declared that its Qwen series of open-weight AI models has crossed the 3 billion download threshold, a milestone it says puts the family ahead of any comparable offerings from Meta or Google. The claim arrived in an emailed statement from the Chinese e‑commerce giant and was quickly contrasted with a Hugging Face report published the previous day.
Hugging Face’s State of Open Models counted 2,045 million Qwen downloads for the current year, rising to 2,061 million when every repository is included. The same analysis logged 151,448 Qwen‑based derivative models on its Hub, far short of Alibaba’s cited figure of more than 300,000 derivatives. Even at the lower count, Qwen derivatives outnumber Meta’s entire open‑model footprint by a factor of 2.6.
The gap between the two numbers reflects the platforms each organization uses to measure activity. Hugging Face’s metrics capture only traffic inside its own Hub; they do not account for API calls, private deployments, or models distributed through other channels. Alibaba, meanwhile, aggregates downloads from its ModelScope platform, which serves a broader global audience.
Despite the statistical divergence, both sources acknowledge that Qwen has become a default choice for developers deciding which models to fine‑tune and deploy. Alibaba has open‑sourced more than 460 models under permissive licences and pushes them through its cloud services into markets across Southeast Asia and Africa. The company has also signaled an intent to monetize heavy users of its open models.
American AI labs are answering the challenge. Meta and Nvidia have each released new open models in recent weeks, with Nvidia explicitly stating that it is “chasing China on open weights.” The competitive pressure underscores a broader race to dominate the open‑model ecosystem.
Domestic policy could also reshape the landscape. Beijing is reportedly weighing restrictions on overseas access to the country’s top models, a move that could curtail the international reach that has helped Qwen accrue its download numbers.
Whether the 3 billion figure accurately reflects global usage remains a point of contention, but the underlying trend is clear: Qwen’s open‑weight strategy has secured a substantial foothold in the AI development community, prompting rival firms and governments to adjust their own approaches.
