Amazon Web Services (AWS) is introducing an artificial‑intelligence‑powered analytics system that will give NBA fans access to a new level of statistical detail. By monitoring up to 29 body parts for each player, the platform captures movement patterns that were previously unmeasured.
These data feed into algorithms that produce novel metrics. The Expected Field Goal Percentage predicts the likelihood of a shot’s success by accounting for shooter orientation, defender positions, and shot difficulty. Gravity quantifies the advantage a player creates on the court, measuring how their movements affect spacing for teammates. The Defensive Score Box breaks down traditional defensive actions—rebounds, blocks, and more—by focusing specifically on defensive players during each play.
Play Finder and Fan Access
In addition to the statistical suite, AWS is adding a Play Finder tool that enables users to search NBA video archives at the granularity of individual plays. Fans will encounter the new stats across multiple channels, including live television broadcasts, the NBA’s official app, and the league’s website.
The rollout builds on an existing partnership in which AWS serves as the official cloud and AI partner for the NBA and its affiliated leagues. By integrating advanced analytics directly into the fan experience, the initiative aims to deepen engagement and provide a richer narrative around each game.
