Claude, a platform used by many of the world's largest retailers and e-commerce companies, has introduced a blueprint to help build commerce agents. This move is expected to make shopping easier for consumers and more efficient for retailers. The blueprint contains the necessary tools and patterns for an engineering team to get a commerce agent up and running in days.
The commerce agent blueprint includes reference implementations of a shopping agent and a merchant agent, which can be built using the Messages API, Agent SDK, or Claude Managed Agents. The shopping agent can be integrated into a retailer's app or website, allowing customers to search for products, compare them, and make purchases using plain language. For instance, a customer can ask for a tent, sleeping bag, and stove for a weekend trip with two kids, and the agent can assemble the right set of items and take the customer through the checkout process.
The merchant agent, on the other hand, supports the people running the store. It can answer questions about sales performance, track inventory, and recommend pricing and promotions based on the store's own sales history. The agent can also draft marketing campaigns to move products that need moving, with the final say always resting with the user.
The blueprint is available today, with live demos for each vertical and an engineering deep-dive on how it was built. This launch is timely, given the upcoming holiday season. Companies like Shopify, Priceline, and others have already seen success with agents built on Claude, which enable consumers to use AI to search for what they want in plain language, find it, compare it, and buy it.
Claude's solutions and ecosystem partners, such as Accenture, Mastercard, and Visa, are working together to enable clients and merchant communities to leverage the blueprints. The code deploys where teams already build with Claude, including the Claude API, Amazon Bedrock, Microsoft Foundry, or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
