Eric Schmidt's fortune could grow considerably if Anthropic lives up to its valuation. The former Google CEO reportedly owns about 1% of the AI lab, according to Bloomberg, a stake that is roughly half the size of the 2% held by co-founder and CEO Dario Amodei.
Schmidt acquired his position by investing tens of millions of dollars in Anthropic's Series A funding round in 2021. PitchBook data cited in the report put the startup's value at $461 million at the time.
The stake could become far more valuable soon. Anthropic is widely expected to go public before the end of the year, and top-end market estimates value the company at as much as $2 trillion. At that price, Schmidt's holding would add as much as $20 billion to his net worth. Bloomberg currently estimates his net worth at $57.5 billion.
Schmidt has been an active tech investor since he stepped down as Google's CEO in 2011. He deploys capital through several vehicles, including Tomorrow Ventures, Innovation Endeavors Management and his family office, Hillspire.
His other artificial intelligence investments include Mistral, General Intuition and Reflection AI.
Schmidt and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
