Figma announced a new Markdown-based editor called Figma Specs at its first Config event in India, a tool that lets teams write down their design language in plain terms. The document can guide both human designers and AI agents working inside the platform. The company says the aim is to help agents, including its own and third-party tools, adhere more closely to a brand's design rules while they create with AI.
Specs can exist as a standalone file in Figma or live alongside the canvas. Users can reference other Figma elements, including objects on the canvas, and embed FigJam diagrams, code layers and designs. Teams can also bring in design libraries, code libraries and guidelines to manage the context behind their design system. Agents can draw on that centralized system to stay within the rules.
The push comes as Figma works to make its AI features more predictable. The company recently made its agent on canvas available to a wider group of users. Because AI outputs are non-deterministic, Figma says it is providing tools to steer the agent toward more consistent results.
Figma also moved its code layers feature into public beta. The feature adds code to designs on the canvas so teams can build more interactive prototypes. Figma first announced code layers in private beta in June. Users can now ask the agent to turn a design into code, or change part of the code to iterate on a prototype.
Loredana Crisan, Figma's chief design officer, said the company sees its platform as the place where software teams decide what they build and ship. She pointed to the effect AI has had on development.
“There are 17-times more lines of code being produced today than in the past,” Crisan told TechCrunch. “But when you’re looking at releases, only 1.3-times more releases. A lot of that code actually is not necessarily built to ship, but really built to discover what the product is. It’s built to design.”
Figma said it now supports more than 20 new tools through its MCP, including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot and the Indian AI startup Sarvam.
The company is also bringing Payload into its workflow. Figma acquired the open-source headless content management system last year and is now integrating it with Figma Make, the product used to generate dynamic websites and manage content directly. Figma said Payload’s downloads have grown sixfold over the past 12 months.
India is becoming a bigger part of the business. Figma opened its first office in the country late last year, with sales, partnership, go-to-market and product support teams. The company said India is its biggest market outside the United States in terms of users. Figma also said the platform works with 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
