OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra has begun rolling out to users, but accessing the new model isn't as straightforward as opening ChatGPT and searching for a button that says 'Astra.' The model, known as GPT-6 Pro, is available to users on the $100 and $200 Pro plans, Business, and Enterprise. Plus subscribers can access Astra via ChatGPT Work and Codex, but not through regular Chat.
The rollout is gradual, so being on an eligible plan doesn't guarantee immediate access to the model. OpenAI hasn't specified when all eligible accounts will receive GPT-6 Astra. To find the model, users with eligible Pro, Business, or Enterprise accounts can open the model picker in a regular ChatGPT conversation and look under Pro for GPT-6 Pro. Enterprise users may face an additional obstacle, as access also depends on workspace model-access permissions.
Plus users can access Astra by opening Work on the web or mobile app and selecting the model once it's rolled out to their account. In the desktop app, users can select ChatGPT, switch from Chat to Work, and choose Astra. Codex users can also choose Astra, but OpenAI notes that the Codex CLI requires version 0.153.0 or newer.
Even if the desktop app has recently updated, OpenAI suggests manually checking for updates by going to Menu > Check for Updates. Work is rolling out separately, so Astra might be available on one platform before another. Users working with local files or desktop apps should be aware of the privacy aspect, as messages and task context may still be stored in the cloud, even when Work runs locally.
When Astra does arrive, users should keep an eye on their usage allowance. According to OpenAI, Astra can use up the allowance more quickly than GPT-5.6 Sol, depending on the complexity of the task, the amount of context, the reasoning required, and other usage settings. OpenAI estimates that Plus users can send approximately five to 45 local Astra messages per five-hour period, while the $100 Pro plan is estimated at 25 to 225 messages, and the $200 tier gets 100 to 900.
To manage their allowance, users can check their current limits and reset times in ChatGPT's usage dashboard. Chat has separate limits, with the $100 Pro plan sharing a 50-message weekly allowance with GPT-5.6 Sol Pro, and the $200 plan allowing 200 GPT-6 Pro messages per week. OpenAI advises users to reserve Astra for tasks that require it and to keep prompts focused, including only relevant files and defining the output format and length.
GPT-6 Astra is also available for developers via the API, with a standard price of $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens. Requests that exceed 272,000 input tokens in total are charged at twice the input and cache rates, and output rates at 1.5x.
