John Deere has taken a significant step in helping farmers make data-driven decisions with the launch of JD, an AI assistant that answers plain-language questions using a farm's own machine and field data. The tool is integrated into the company's farm management platform, Operations Center, and allows farmers to ask questions like comparing fuel use during tillage across years or how planting singulation varied between fields.
According to John Deere's chief technology officer, Jahmy Hindman, JD changes the experience from navigating through a sea of data to simply asking it a question. The AI assistant provides concrete examples, such as which sprayer operator covers the most acres an hour, to help farmers optimize their operations.
The launch of JD comes with a ten-point voluntary Farmer Data Commitment, which ensures that farmers control their data, and John Deere does not sell it. Farmers can also switch off the flow of data to third parties at any time. This commitment is significant, especially in the EU, where the Data Act has applied to connected products since September 2025.
In Europe, the Data Act has largely made such commitments obligatory, and manufacturers are barred from using the data to derive insights about a user's economic situation, assets, or production methods. This clause was written to prevent manufacturers from using data to determine what a farm can afford to buy.
While JD is currently only available to selected US customers, with wider availability promised later this year, it remains to be seen whether the AI assistant will be launched in Europe. The early access program is American, and the assistant runs on data the platform already holds.
The launch of JD highlights the importance of vertical AI in agriculture, where the value is heading. In Europe, the farmer holds the key by law, rather than by promise, and the Data Act has given them more control over their data.
