How much revenue did Microsoft earn from OpenAI?

Microsoft generated $10 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI in the quarter ended September 30, the company said in a regulatory filing Wednesday. That amount is nearly 11% of Microsoft's total quarterly revenue of $92.3 billion, a sign of how tightly the two companies remain bound financially even as they go after many of the same customers.

Microsoft's fiscal year begins in July, so the quarter is the first of its fiscal 2027. For the full 2026 fiscal year, revenue tied to OpenAI reached $24.1 billion. At the latest quarterly pace, Microsoft would collect about $40 billion a year from OpenAI-related arrangements.

The company also reported $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables from OpenAI at the end of September, up from $6 billion at the end of June. Those receivables reflect money OpenAI owes for earlier transactions. They do not represent new revenue.

The filing does not break down how much of that $10 billion came from revenue-sharing payments and how much came from Azure cloud computing services. TechCrunch has asked both companies for more detail. In November 2025, TechCrunch reported, citing leaked documents, that Microsoft had received $865.8 million in net revenue-sharing payments from OpenAI during the first nine months of that year.

Is OpenAI still required to share revenue with Microsoft?

OpenAI reportedly shares 20% of its revenue with Microsoft under an earlier deal, in which Microsoft invested more than $13 billion in the AI startup. Neither company has publicly confirmed that percentage. Under an agreement reached in April 2026, OpenAI must continue sharing revenue with Microsoft through 2030, subject to a cap. The same agreement lets OpenAI work with competing cloud providers.

The relationship has been loosening for months. In October 2025, Microsoft gave up its hold on OpenAI so the startup could partner more freely with other cloud providers. In exchange, OpenAI committed to buy an additional $250 billion in Azure services under an agreement from the same month.

Does Microsoft still have a stake in OpenAI?

Microsoft's ownership stake in OpenAI has also edged down. The company held about 25% in June and 24% in September. That continues a gradual slide from roughly 27% after OpenAI's October 2025 recapitalization. Microsoft did not say what caused the dilution.
