Is OpenAI acquiring Pierre Computer Company?

OpenAI announced that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, Inc., the company behind the Code Storage service and a set of open-source developer tools. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. Until it closes, OpenAI and Pierre will operate as separate, independent companies.

What tools does Pierre Computer Company make?

Developers may already have used Pierre's work without knowing it. The company's Trees and Diffs libraries are part of the Codex app today. Trees helps developers move quickly through a project's files, and Diffs shows what changed. OpenAI said both tools make it practical to review and navigate large volumes of code.

The acquisition is aimed at the Git workflows that software teams depend on, and at how those workflows change as coding agents take on more of the work. OpenAI said it has seen the strain in its own engineering. Earlier this week, the company described how it is scaling Git internally with Pando, its in-house source control backend built for engineers and agents. The company said it wants to set the standard for modern software development, from the first branch an agent creates through to the moment code is deployed.

Pierre's other products fill out that picture. Diffs includes an Edit mode that lets a reviewer fix a line of code at the spot where the problem appears. Pierre recently released Highlights, a syntax highlighter that updates as a developer types or as an agent streams code. Code Storage offers an API that lets applications store code and track its history using Git. OpenAI said the small team that built the Edit mode also designed that API.

OpenAI said the two companies will ship new products and platforms together once the deal closes. The company's goal is to advance source control across the industry and to connect the code a company ships with the decisions its people make. OpenAI did not describe what those products would look like, and the announcement did not include a purchase price.

What happens to Code Storage customers after the deal?

Pierre's open-source projects will stay open source, and OpenAI said it will keep contributing to them. Existing Code Storage customers can keep using the service after the acquisition closes. In the meantime, OpenAI plans to bring Code Storage's features and functionality into Codex.
