OpenAI is restricting practical information about weapons and security systems that could be misused to facilitate violence for teen ChatGPT users, even when there is no sign of violent intent. Teens can still use ChatGPT to prevent or de-escalate violence, find support and connect with a trusted adult. The company is also strengthening policy boundaries for all users.
OpenAI is clamping down on the weapons-related information teenagers can get from ChatGPT, and the company says the new limits apply even when a question seems innocent.
What weapons information will ChatGPT restrict for teens?
In its latest post, OpenAI said it already has policies that stop ChatGPT from helping users carry out violent acts or from helping teens get their hands on weapons. The company now wants to go further. It plans to “restrict practical information about weapons and security systems that could be misused to facilitate violence, even when there’s no sign of violent intent” for its teen users.
Can teens still use ChatGPT for safety help?
Teens will still be able to use ChatGPT for certain purposes. The company said the chatbot remains available to help them prevent or de-escalate violence, find support and connect with a trusted adult.
Do the new ChatGPT limits apply to adults too?
The restrictions are not limited to younger users. OpenAI is strengthening policy boundaries for all of its users, particularly when it comes to “reconstructions of past mass attacks, including details about the weapons and equipment used and how they were obtained, and detailed comparisons on scale of harm that could amplify an attacker’s notoriety.”
The new rules sit alongside parental controls OpenAI introduced last year. Those controls send notifications to parents when a linked teen account has violated ChatGPT policies related to violent threats or acts of violence.
The additional safeguards come after OpenAI was sued in a wrongful death lawsuit last year. They also follow a public apology from the company’s CEO, Sam Altman, for not alerting police to alarming chat logs connected to the Tumbler Ridge shooting earlier this year.
OpenAI also said it will publish its first Community Safety Report in early 2027. Updates will follow every six months after that.
