Samsung Electronics posted a record operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, about $80 billion, in the third quarter, driven by strong demand for memory chips used in AI data centers. Chips accounted for nearly all of the gain, while mobile, networks, and TV and home appliance units lost money. Revenue reached a new high of 195.3 trillion won.
Samsung Electronics posted a record operating profit of 107.4 trillion won, about $80 billion, in the third quarter, the company said Thursday. Demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence data centers continued to climb.
The full results confirmed preliminary figures Samsung released earlier this month, when it said profit was roughly nine times higher than a year earlier. Revenue also reached a new high of 195.3 trillion won, up 14 percent from the previous quarter.
What drove Samsung's record quarterly profit?
Chips accounted for nearly all of the gain. Samsung's semiconductor business brought in 106.5 trillion won on revenue of 147.1 trillion won. Its memory unit set quarterly records for both sales and profit, driven by strong server demand and higher prices.
Sales of HBM4, the newest generation of high-bandwidth memory that sits alongside AI processors, grew significantly during the quarter. The company's contract chipmaking arm also improved, helped by sales of the base chips used in HBM.
Did Samsung's mobile and TV businesses lose money?
Not every division fared as well. The mobile and networks unit, which makes Galaxy phones, posted an operating loss of 0.6 trillion won as costs rose. The TV and home appliance business lost 0.2 trillion won. The display unit turned a profit of 1.1 trillion won.
How much is Samsung spending on new plants and equipment?
To meet demand, Samsung spent 29 trillion won on new plants and equipment in the quarter, more than double the previous three months. The company expects to spend about 84.4 trillion won over the full year.
Shareholders are also in line for a payout. Samsung declared a quarterly dividend of 4,601 won per share, worth 30 trillion won in total, and repeated its plan to return 90 trillion to 110 trillion won to shareholders this year.
Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, Samsung expects memory sales to keep rising as new CPU and GPU platforms reach the market. It also forecasts double-digit revenue growth at its foundry business.
Rival SK Hynix also reported record profit this week. It said it expects the memory shortage to last until 2030.
