Sweden's Government Offices, which runs the work of the prime minister and the ministries, has blocked staff from using OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude on their work computers. The block took effect today.
Ekot, the news service of public broadcaster Sveriges Radio, first reported the plan on October 23. Staff will no longer be able to reach the two chatbots through a web browser. Instead, they are being sent to Microsoft's Copilot. The Government Offices told SVT by email that it has checked that tool and made it safer.
Why is Sweden blocking ChatGPT and Claude on government computers?
The aim is simple: staff should use only tools the government has approved. The block covers the web versions of both chatbots. Mikael Wettercrantz, the agency's head of digital services, told Ekot that AI tools used without a contract can put the safety of its data at risk.
Can government staff still use ChatGPT or Claude?
Not everyone is cut off. Some staff can still use ChatGPT and Claude through Intric, a Stockholm company that runs a platform for building AI assistants. Intric won a deal with the Government Offices in July. The company says its platform runs on servers in Sweden, with no need for foreign cloud firms.
Other Swedish agencies have moved in the same direction. The Swedish Tax Agency and the National Board of Institutional Care have also blocked AI services, Ekot found. SVT reported that the Swedish Enforcement Authority is considering a similar step.
The government had already limited the use of DeepSeek, the Chinese AI chatbot, before this decision. Last week, the United States went further and banned DeepSeek products across its federal civilian agencies, BleepingComputer reported.
Large organizations outside government have also set limits on outside AI tools. In the United States, Charles Schwab is blocking AI agents such as Meta's Muse from moving client money.
OpenAI and Anthropic have not publicly commented on the Swedish decision.
