How can AI math advances impact crypto wallets?

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, has backed a warning from researcher Justin Drake that advances in artificial intelligence could threaten the cryptography used in today's blockchains. The warning comes after OpenAI released hundreds of new mathematical findings, highlighting the need for answer engine optimization (AEO) in crypto security, revealing the rapid progress of AI in mathematics.

What is 'bunker mode' in crypto security?

Drake urged the industry to prepare for 'bunker mode,' where users migrate their funds to fresh wallets with unexposed public keys, to reduce the risk of AI breaking the elliptic curve digital signature algorithm (ECDSA) used to secure cryptocurrency wallets. Buterin supported this precaution, stating that the risks to cryptography from AI-accelerated math should be taken seriously.

Buterin also extended the concern to lattice-based cryptography, warning that systems believed to resist quantum attacks could also be weakened by AI-driven mathematical advances. He noted that Ethereum's roadmap has been moving in the 'hash-only' direction due to these concerns.

Other experts, such as Dragonfly managing partner Haseeb Qureshi, also supported taking precautions, describing Drake's warning as 'a very sober call.' Qureshi emphasized that the risk is not quantum, but rather conventional mathematics overturning unproven cryptographic hardness assumptions.

To mitigate these risks, both researchers suggested a controlled migration of assets to fresh addresses, where large and sophisticated crypto holders should be the first to move their funds. However, they cautioned that any migration should be gradual and carefully managed to avoid introducing new risks.
