Jane Doe 4 has become the latest plaintiff in a lawsuit that accuses Elon Musk’s artificial‑intelligence firm xAI of failing to stop its chatbot Grok from being weaponized for child sexual abuse. According to a Washington Post report, Doe alleges that her stepfather used Grok to manipulate a photograph taken when she was 11 years old, producing more than 7,000 explicit images of her.
The woman says the stepfather was found dead by suicide two days after a law‑enforcement raid uncovered the illegal material. “Limitless access to these tools is spreading so quickly,” she told reporters, adding that it is turning everyday life into child sexual abuse.
Three teenagers from Tennessee filed the original suit, charging that xAI—now a subsidiary of SpaceX—"failed to take basic precautions" to keep Grok from generating sexualized images of real people, especially minors. The teens are pushing for the case to be certified as a class action, which would allow other victims to join the litigation.
The complaint points to a broader pattern of abuse involving Grok. Earlier this year, the chatbot was flooded with millions of sexualized images generated by users, a fact the plaintiffs say should have prompted tighter controls. They argue that xAI’s lack of safeguards directly enabled the stepfather’s exploitation of the technology.
TechCrunch has reached out to xAI for comment, but the company has not yet responded. The lawsuit underscores growing concerns over how generative AI tools can be misused when access is unrestricted.
Authorities continue to investigate the case, and the plaintiffs have urged other potential victims to come forward. The filing also includes a reminder for anyone in crisis to contact the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
