Palantir Defense Chief Says AI Race Raises Risk for Taiwan

Mike Gallagher, Palantir's head of defense and a former Republican congressman, warned that the race to lead in artificial intelligence makes it more tempting for Chinese leader Xi Jinping to seize Taiwan before China falls behind for good. Speaking at a defense policy event in Indiana on Wednesday, Gallagher said Taiwan is home to TSMC, the world's top maker of advanced AI chips, and that a Chinese takeover could let Beijing hold the global economy hostage. US intelligence has played down the near-term risk. A March assessment found that an invasion would carry a high risk of failure. Leggi di più

Microsoft Books $10 Billion in Revenue From OpenAI Ties in One Quarter

Microsoft reported $10 billion in revenue from its commercial arrangements with OpenAI in the quarter ended September 30, according to a regulatory filing released Wednesday. The sum accounts for nearly 11% of Microsoft's $92.3 billion in total quarterly revenue. The figure underscores the deep financial links between the two companies, even as they increasingly compete for the same customers. Microsoft also said OpenAI owed it $7.2 billion in outstanding receivables at the end of September, up from $6 billion three months earlier. Leggi di più

Qwenputer Embeds a Working RISC-V CPU in the Weights of Qwen3.5

A developer has released Qwenputer, a modified version of the Qwen 3.5 4B language model with a RISC-V processor compiled directly into its weights. The chip runs arithmetic, C and MicroPython code during the model's normal text generation, without plugins, external tools or a sandbox. The model uses the attention layers that already exist in Qwen 3.5 as its working memory. On several arithmetic benchmarks, it matched or beat the base model with a Python tool attached, and it scored far above the unmodified model. The project is open on Hugging Face, ModelScope and GitHub, and it runs on a single 24 GB GPU. Leggi di più

New York Times Adds AI Recipe Substitution Tool to Cooking App, and Readers Push Back

The New York Times has added an AI feature to its NYT Cooking app that lets subscribers modify recipes, most often to make ingredient substitutions. The tool is rolling out gradually to iOS subscribers, and the Times says it is optional. Many readers have reacted sharply. An analysis of the 171 reader comments on the Times' announcement found that roughly 77 percent were negative, while about 14 percent were positive. Readers objected to AI in cooking on principle, citing environmental concerns and the value of their subscriptions, and a number asked for a way to turn the feature off. Leggi di più

Instagram’s Mosseri Warns Anger Over AI Will Grow Worse

Instagram head Adam Mosseri says public frustration with artificial intelligence is growing and will keep growing, especially in creative industries. In a podcast interview, he said many people “really don’t like AI,” pointed to college students booing tech executives at graduation ceremonies, and acknowledged that Instagram has not solved the problem of AI-generated content. He said the platform is requiring AI accounts to label themselves, but he does not think it is practical to ban AI content outright. Misleading material, including celebrity deepfakes, remains a problem on the app. Leggi di più

Justice Department Probes Whether Nvidia’s $12.9B Hugging Face Deal Would Hurt AI Competition

The U.S. Justice Department is examining how Nvidia’s $12.9 billion purchase of Hugging Face could affect competition in artificial intelligence, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing two people familiar with the matter. Officials want to know whether the deal would give Nvidia a key distribution point for AI and whether the chipmaker could use the platform to hurt rivals. The questions come alongside a years-long DOJ investigation into Nvidia’s business conduct. Nvidia declined to comment, Hugging Face did not respond, and the DOJ declined to comment, citing long-standing policy. Leggi di più

Google Expands Ads in AI Search Overseas as Core Search Growth Slows

Google is bringing advertising into its AI-powered search experiences to international markets, betting that generative AI can open new revenue streams as growth in its core search business cools. The expansion was announced Wednesday during Alphabet's third-quarter earnings call, where the company reported $127.6 billion in revenue, up 25 percent from a year earlier. Search revenue grew 12 percent, down from 17 percent in the second quarter, and Alphabet shares fell 8 percent after the results. GitHub Launches Copilot Fusion as AI Agents Start 40% of Pull Requests

GitHub launched Copilot Fusion at its GitHub Universe developer conference on Wednesday. The system chooses which AI model, or combination of models, handles each step of a coding task. Jay Parikh, executive vice president of CoreAI at Microsoft, said the top tier, Fusion Max, came within two points of Anthropic's Claude Opus 5.5 Max on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, at half the cost and with 40% less time per task. Starting Wednesday, GitHub Enterprise customers can use every Copilot feature without buying a separate subscription and will pay only for the AI credits they use. The same day, GitHub released its annual Octoverse report, which found that agents started more than 40% of pull requests by September. Leggi di più

Anthropic Asks California to Let Courts Block Risky AI Models

Anthropic has urged California Governor Gavin Newsom to let the state ask a court to block AI models that pose a serious risk. The AI company made its case in a letter dated 15 October, first reported by Politico. The letter responds to an executive order Newsom signed in September, which set up a working group to recommend ways to strengthen the state's AI safety laws. Anthropic's proposal would let the state's attorney general seek a court order pausing a model. OpenAI sent its own recommendations to the governor, but did not back court orders to block models.
